Despite what you may think, it’s pretty normal to have poor credit issues during your lifetime.
Even people with bruised credit still need to make large purchases, such as reliable transportation. The good news is, there are options to buy a vehicle—even if you have bad credit. Here are a few things to keep in mind.
- Know your credit score. Some buy-here pay-here auto dealerships are not as ethical as they should be. That’s why you should check your credit score before you meet with anyone so that you know what it is. One benefit to checking is to see if there are quick and simple ways to improve it. For example, if you have three fairly small outstanding medical bills, pay them off. That might be just enough to improve your credit enough to qualify for a lower interest rate. Make sure you have those collections removed.
- Research. A lot of auto dealers won’t work with anyone who has credit issues. Or they only offer financing on a few select vehicles—so you won’t have many choices. Barrett Motors staff offers financing for every vehicle at each of our three locations in Sachse, Garland, and Rowlett. Rather than drive all over town talking to people at dealerships, pick up the phone, call them and ask to talk to someone in the finance department. You’ll quickly find out who treats you with respect and who doesn’t.
- Look for a vehicle within a two-week time period. Every time you meet with a lender or finance expert, they run a credit report. However, if all those checks happen within a two-week time period, it won’t negatively affect your credit score. If you run those inquiries out over time, your credit score will get dinged again and it will hurt your rating. It’s not fair, but that’s how it works.
- The buy-here pay-here option. Barrett Motors finance staff can offer great options for every vehicle on each of our lots. Because our motto is, “We Finance Your Credibility…Not Your Past Inability,” you can usually drive off in your choice vehicle for your lifestyle and your budget that day. Because every vehicle has passed a thorough AutoCheck inspection, you’ll drive away confidently, knowing it is a certified and safe automobile.
